Thank you Texas Book Festival for hosting me & for a rich, inspiring weekend of events! A wonderful standing-room only panel with @lrjaramillo and @stephaniemaciasgibson in which we talked myth, magic, and the power to keep cultivating a world where all are safe and free. I met so many amazing readers and people who share this vision and are working toward it every day. It was also fabulous to see @lilliamr , Tomas Munoz and so many other amazing writers. I’m including here a pic of the African American History Memorial right at the foot of the Texas Capitol, a reminder that as we grieve and resist we are part of a long story, working in the wake of generations of trailblazers, continuing a great unfinished story con ánimo y amor.

A joy to host the one & only @cristina_garcia_novelist in my @sfsu_cwmfa class “Writers on Writing: the Work of Love and Daring.” Cristina’s voice is always trailblazing, brilliant, and a balm—and as we prepare for the fights ahead in an era of hostility and violence, she brought us inspiration and fuel. And love. She read us her essay in RADICAL HOPE, an anthology of resistance essays I edited in the wake of the 2016 election. It was incredible to hear it (read aloud for the first time!) and feel its ongoing prescience and visionary power. Then she answered students’ questions about her amazing novel VANISHING MAPS, the writing life, and more. She gave us so much. We are still here, giving each other so much.

Rest in power, Adela Vázquez. 💔 Trans icon and trailblazer, mother and sister beloved to many, leader and elder and bright light. In 2022, I arrived at Adela’s home in San Francisco to record her oral history and was stunned to see the cake she’d baked from scratch the night before for the occasion, plus finger sandwiches and porcelain teacups, the most glamorous hostess, a true diva move. And then she sat down and poured out incredible life stories, vibrant, without equal. I was on my own gender-expanding journey and in that single afternoon I received more healing from her than I could ever say. I am heartbroken that she passed away unexpectedly, leaving so much mourning for the many who loved her, this woman who struck me as a beautiful living volcano of love. I’m unbelievably grateful that her voice is woven into my next book SO MANY STARS and hope this allows more people to be touched and inspired by her immortal trans spirit.

Thanks to the incredible @i__rojascontreras , @cristina_garcia_novelist , and Parnaz Foroutan for conversing with me with such brilliance, grace, and insightful care. And thanks to EVERYONE who came and brought their incredible, shimmering energies to these events.

’d set out to write a book with--so I thought it to myself--"enough queer joy in it to light up a town." But of course, the joy is where else but right here in all of us, ready to light up heavens and earth. It's amazing how much love and joy and beauty and power hums in our communities, all day, every day, and what happens when we gather, celebrate, let it shine and sing. Gracias, gracias -- ✨🏹✨📚✨🌈✨

Back in 1992, her first novel DREAMING IN CUBAN shattered glass ceilings for Latina writers by becoming a finalist for the National Book Award. Since then, she has kept blazing trails with one gorgeous, brilliant novel after another, most recently VANISHING MAPS—but wait, there’s more. She has also mentored and championed several generations of younger writers, in the most beautiful way. She embodies the spirit of generosity and literary community like no one else. She is such an inspiration for me, not only for how to write, but for how to live and love as a writer.
